Bringing Solar to Telangana’s Farms: PM-KUSUM Component-A Implementation
- The Government of Telangana, in alignment with MNRE’s national push for clean energy, is actively implementing the Pradhan Mantri Kisan Urja Suraksha evam Utthaan Mahabhiyan (PM-KUSUM) scheme to uplift the agricultural sector through solar power.
- This visionary initiative aims to enhance energy and water security, while helping farmers increase income by promoting decentralized renewable energy solutions.
- Under Component-A of the scheme, Telangana targets the installation of 4,000 MW of ground-mounted, grid-connected solar power plants, ranging from 500 kW to 2 MW, on barren, uncultivated, or agricultural land located within 5 km of 33/11 kV substations.
- The Telangana Renewable Energy Development Corporation Ltd. (TGREDCO) is the designated implementing agency, inviting participation from a broad group of stakeholders—individual farmers, cooperatives, FPOs, SHGs, VOs, Panchayats, and developers—to set up solar plants on owned or leased land.
Objectives:
Key Highlights:
- Solar power plants will be grid-connected and supported by a 25-year power purchase agreement (PPA) with local DISCOMs.
- Farmers and eligible groups can earn steady income by selling electricity at state-fixed tariffs.
- The initiative helps reduce diesel use, lower environmental impact, and bring long-term energy resilience to rural areas.
